Guwahati: The body of 18-year-old Madhurjya Barman, Assistant General Secretary of the West Nalbari Regional Studentsโ€™ Union (AASU), was brought to his ancestral home in Balipathar, Chamata, in Assamโ€™s Nalbari district on Monday after postmortem examination.

Barman was allegedly hacked to death on May 31 while returning home on a scooter with his 17-year-old, after visiting Nalbari town to buy books. The incident took place near Gangapur under Mukalmua Police Station.

According to police and eyewitnesses, they were attacked by two assailants identified as Roz Ali and Ashik Ali, who allegedly used sharp weapons.

Barman sustained critical injuries and was declared dead at Nalbari Medical College and Hospital. The other victim suffered serious injuries and is undergoing treatment at Gauhati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH).

Family members and locals gathered at the residence as the body arrived and expressed grief over his death.

The family alleged that the attack was linked to repeated harassment of the injured girl by one of the accused, including marriage proposals and threats after rejection.

The body was handed over to the family following postmortem. A large number of villagers, AASU members, and residents attended the last rites.

AASU condemned the incident and staged protests demanding swift justice. The organisation warned of statewide agitation if the accused are not arrested soon.

Senior AASU leaders visited the family and the injured girlโ€™s relatives.

In a related development, the prime accused Roz Ali was killed in a police encounter in the Mukalmua area while allegedly trying to flee and snatch a weapon from an officer.

The second accused, Ashik Ali, is absconding, and a manhunt is underway.

Police have registered a case and are investigating the incident. They have appealed for calm and said efforts are underway to bring the accused to justice.
