Guwahati: The Nalbari district administration has approved the development of a 5-kilometre Emergency Landing Facility (ELF) on National Highway 27, making it the second such facility planned in Assam.

The proposed facility will convert a stretch of the highway between Tihu and Madhapur into an auxiliary runway capable of handling military transport aircraft and civilian commercial flights during emergencies.

Officials said the project is intended to serve as an alternative logistics and operational hub during national security situations, natural disasters and other emergencies requiring rapid movement of personnel and supplies.

According to officials, the runway will be developed to meet military operational standards and include reinforced infrastructure designed for heavy aircraft operations.

The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) is coordinating with local authorities to implement zoning regulations and maintain no-construction zones along the approach paths to ensure operational safety.

The development follows the operationalisation of Assamโ€™s first emergency landing facility near Dibrugarh as part of efforts to strengthen strategic infrastructure in the Northeast.
