Guwahati: A violent incident in Assamโ€™s Nalbari district has taken a serious turn after the main accused in the Gangapur attack case, Roz Ali, was killed during a police encounter in Mukalmua, officials said on June 1.

The case stems from a late-night assault on Saturday near Gangapur under Mukalmua, where two youths travelling on a scooter were attacked. Nineteen-year-old Madhurjya Barman, a resident of Balipathar in Chamata and office bearer of the West Nalbari Regional Students Union, died at the scene.

The second victim, 17-year-old Mridumudra Deka, sustained critical injuries and is currently receiving intensive care at Gauhati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH).

Police have alleged that Roz Ali and another accused, Ashik Ali, were involved in the attack. A large-scale search operation was launched soon after the incident, which led to an encounter in which Roz Ali was killed.

The incident has triggered strong reactions across the region, with several local groups and residents linking the assault to an alleged rejection of a marriage proposal from one of the accused.

Some organizations have described the matter as a case of โ€œlove jihadโ€, though police have not verified any such motive and have stated that the investigation is ongoing.

Nalbari MLA Jayanta Malla Baruah also reacted strongly, calling for heightened vigilance over what he termed a growing social concern, while urging strict action against those responsible.

He expressed grief over the death of Madhurjya Barman and wished for the speedy recovery of the injured student.

Authorities have not yet confirmed the exact motive behind the attack, and the investigation is continuing to determine the full sequence of events.
