Guwahati: Following reports of the custodial death of a detainee in Lakhimpur, Assam, the in-charge (IC) of the concerned police outpost has been suspended.
Director General of Police, GP Singh said that the IC of the Khelmati Outpost, Dipankar Changmai has been placed under suspension along with the on-duty sentry at the time of the incident.
The DGP added that an independent enquiry has also been ordered and all mandatory provisions of law and directions of NHRC as well as AHRC are being followed.

It may be mentioned that on Thursday morning an alleged custodial death at the Khelmati Police Outpost in Lakhimpur, Assam was reported.
The police officials detained the person on mobile theft charges on Wednesday evening.
However, on Thursday morning it was reported that he died under mysterious circumstances at the police outpost premises.
The incident triggered protests from the family of the deceased and locals.
They called for a thorough investigation alleging foul play.

The deceased was identified as 42-year-old Arsabh Ali, a resident of Lakhimpur’s South Chandmari locality.
According to police, Ali was brought into custody for allegedly purchasing a stolen mobile phone.
Some reports even claim he was suspected of being part of a mobile phone theft gang.
However, no official confirmation has yet been made regarding his involvement with any gang.
The police report claimed that Ali fell ill unexpectedly at the police station and collapsed.
He died shortly after the incident.
This sparked outrage among locals and his family members who accused the police of assaulting Ali brutally inside the police station.
