Guwahati: An alleged custodial death at the Khelmati Police Station in Lakhimpur, Assam has sparked massive protests from locals.

According to reports, a person who was detained by the police officials of the Khelmati Police Station on mobile theft charges died under mysterious circumstances at the police station premises.

The incident has triggered protests from the family of the deceased and locals.

They have also called for a thorough investigation alleging foul play.

The deceased has been identified as 42-year-old Arsabh Ali, a resident of Lakhimpur’s South Chandmari locality.

According to police, Ali was brought into custody for allegedly purchasing a stolen mobile phone.

Some reports even claim he was suspected of being part of a mobile phone theft gang.

However, no official confirmation has yet been made.

The police report claimed that Ali fell ill unexpectedly at the police station and collapsed. 

He died shortly after the incident.

This sparked outrage among locals and his family members who accused the police of assaulting Ali brutally inside the police station.
