Guwahati: The special team of women forest personnel, known as “Banadurga,” of Kaziranga National Park has been conferred the Mohan Sharma Sadichha Environment Protection Award 2026.
The announcement was made by the authorities of Kaziranga National Park and Tiger Reserve on Sunday evening, coinciding with the observance of International Women’s Day.
The Banadurga team, comprising trained women forest guards, has emerged as a vital force in the day-to-day protection of wildlife and the fragile ecosystem of Kaziranga.
Working on the frontline of conservation, these personnel take part in forest patrols, anti-poaching operations, surveillance of sensitive zones, and monitoring of wildlife movement within the park.
Their duties often require them to operate in difficult terrain and challenging weather conditions while ensuring the safety of endangered species and maintaining strict vigilance against illegal activities such as poaching and encroachment.
The women guards also assist in strengthening security measures in vulnerable areas of the park and contribute to conservation awareness.
Officials said the Mohan Sharma Sadichha Environment Protection Award 2026 acknowledges the courage, discipline, and dedication displayed by the Banadurga team while performing these demanding responsibilities.
The award is seen as recognition of the critical role played by women in strengthening conservation efforts in one of India’s most important wildlife habitats.
In a statement issued on Sunday evening, the authorities of Kaziranga National Park and Tiger Reserve expressed sincere appreciation for the Banadurga team and all personnel associated with their work, noting that the honour highlights their unwavering commitment to nature and wildlife protection.
