A coach of down Agartala-Sialdah Kanchanjunga Express on Thursday derailed near New Haflong railway station in Southern Assam’s Dima Hasao district.
Sources said the incident took place around 2 pm at the stretch between New Haflong and Jatinga Lampur railway station. The coach connected with the engine derailed after hitting a buffalo.
None of the train passengers were injured during the accident as it was not in full speed. Sources, however, said the buffalo died as the moving train run over it. Top railway officials have rushed to the spot and arranged to transport passengers from the accident spot.
The train movement to southern Assam and Tripura were disrupted for around four following the incident. Services in the stretch were resumed at 6 pm.
“Soon after the incident, railway relief teams were pressed into service, and it took four hours for them to restore normality in train services towards Silchar and Lumding. Subsequently, rail traffic towards Gadag was restored at 6.00p.m,” said an official.
