In a bid to promote sports, literature and cultural activities among the manipuri people, Assam’s Hojai district committee of All Assam Manipuri Students Union is organising a three-day ‘Yaoshang Khumhei- 2020 from March 8 to 10.

It is a festival of sports, literary and cultural event organized at Bihutohli playground in Hojai.

The festival was formally inaugurated by local legislator Shiladitya Dev on Sunday morning, which was followed with traditional Manipuri dance and music.

More than 25 Manipuri clubs of Hojai have been participating every year in this colourful event with enthusiasm.

This time around 2000 athletes from all around Assam have registered their names in the event.

All Manipur Cheibi Association, LAIHUI, a Manipuri cultural troop from Manipur will enthrall the audience during the three day event.

“During Holi festivity youths get divert or are forced into wrong direction of drinking alcoholic substance, drugs, to prevent such activities,” said Hemanta Singha, media adviser, AAMSU.

“This festival is organized every year. This is the fifth edition of the Yaoshang Khumhei festival. Our objective is to keep engaged young generation into sports, literary and cultural activities so that they don’t get indulge into illicit activities,” he said.

“Since last five years, in order to mould the youths in positive direction and to uplift the Manipuri literature, culture, sports and other extinct/endangered sports, we have been organizing this event and from next time onwards AAMSU will be trying to organize this programme in more grand scale taking each and every community together,” said P H Manibabu Singha, adviser, AAMSU.

On the sidelines of the event, MLA Shiladitya Dev exhorted to everyone to go back to their original tradition to live a happy, prosperous and healthy life.

He said if we rely on our tradition of ‘namaste, while greeting’, etc, no coronavirus can ever touch us, as we will not come in physical contact with anyone.”

“Holi festival is the symbol to promote brotherhood, peace and harmony amongst each community,” Dev added.

Members of AAMSU have appealed civil, cultural organizations and general public to shower support and attend the event.
