Police have busted a gambling racket in lower Assam’s Dhubri town with the arrest of nine persons ahead of the festival of light Diwali.
Playing cards, stake money of Rs 77,500 and mobile phones were also seized during a crackdown on the gambling racket at ward no 14 of Dhubri town on Friday night, Dhubri (HQ) DSP Trinayan Bhuyan said.
Acting on a tip off, a police team led by DSP (HQ) Bhuyan swooped down on a house belonging to one Abdul Rashid and arrested the nine persons.
All the arrested persons were booked under relevant sections of Assam Gaming and Betting Act, 1970, said police.
Gambling is a common phenomenon in the district and every year in the run up to Diwali illegal gambling activities go up.
Police said they have intensified operations against gambling in the district.
“We have instructed our officers and personnel to carry out special drives against gambling across the district,” said DSP Bhuyan.
