The Dhubri district authorities have shifted a total of 409 prisoners of the district jail after flood waters submerged the jail barracks in the late night on Monday.
Dhubri is one of the 30 districts of Assam affected in the second wave of floods this year.
All the prisoners have now been shifted to the Dhubri Girls’ College building, located near the jail.
The shifting of jail inmates was carried out under tight security cover of the Central Para Military Force (CPMF).
The shifting was completed after with a three-hour-long exercise.

The shifted jail inmates include 400 males and 9 females.
The exercise of shifting of the jail inmates was started at 11 at Monday night and was completed at about 2 am next day.
Ananta Lal Gyani, the district magistrate of Dhubri, monitored the entire process of shifting while Nirupam Hazarika, additional superintendent of police, Dhubri; Trinayan Bhuyan, deputy superintendent of police (HQ), Dhubri, the jail superintendent of Dhubri Jail and other officials concerned assisted him.

“We shifted a total of 409 jail inmates to the Dhubri Girls’ College building through boat as the flood water entered the jail barracks. The water level is still rising,” a police officer told Northeast Now.
Meanwhile, the road connectivity of the district headquarter town remains cut off for the second day due to flood triggered by continuous rise in the water level of mighty river Brahmaputra and its tributaries in Dhubri town and across the district.
At least two persons have lost their lives in flood related mishaps.
Flood waters have also submerged several hectares of crop land near the river banks due to strong currents of flood waters.
“We have set up a number of flood relief camps in susceptible areas. The district administration has been coordinating to provide reliefs to the inmates taking shelter in these camps,” said Dhubri deputy commissioner Ananta Lal Gyani.
On the other hand, the power supply of Dhubri town has been disconnected since Monday evening and the entire town is passing moments under total darkness.

The crop area affected by flood is 20,695.5 hectares while the population affected is 10,79,383.
The district administration has set up 56 relief camps which have given shelter to 15,738 flood affected people including 6,602 males, 5,486 females and 3,599 children.
The district administration has also set up 43 relief distribution centres.
