Sensation prevails in Baksa district after a doctor couple was seriously injured in an attack by an ex-Army man at their government quarter in Tamulpur.

The former Army man, identified as Samen Basumatary of Punia village under Tamulpur police station, has been arrested by the police.

On Sunday night, at around 10, Samen Basumatary entered the government quarter of Dr. Gautam Medhi and his wife Dr. Pinky Choudhury, who are serving as physicians at the Tamulpur Primary Health Centre (PHC).

It has been alleged that Samen Basumatary, who had a weapon in his hand, entered the doctor’s quarter with an intention to murder Dr Medhi.

But Dr Pinky Choudhury, wife of Dr. Medhi, who was standing nearby, tried to save her husband in which she received serious injuries in her right hand.

Samen attacked Dr. Medhi for the second time in which the doctor received injury on his forehead.

The former Army man also attacked Anuska Medhi, the 16-year-old daughter of the doctor couple.

In the meantime, all the family members started shouting seeking help.

On being alerted, the neighbours and colleagues of the doctor couple rushed to the spot and caught Samen.

Receiving the information, a team of police, led by police officers Manoj Kumar Das and Banajit Uzir reached the spot and arrested Samen Basumatary.

Dr. Medhi lodged an FIR with the Tamulpur police station on Sunday night.

The police have started an investigation after registering a case against Samen Basumatary.

Samen was produced before the court of the district judicial magistrate on Monday and sent the culprit to judicial custody.

Seriously injured Dr. Pinky Choudhury was sent to Guwahati along with her daughter, but only to be back to Nalbari where Dr. Choudhury was operated in a private hospital.

Dr. Medhi has also been sent to Nalbari for better treatment.

AASU, ABSU, ABYSF, Tamulpur District Karmachari Parishad, Tamulpur District BPF, local MLA Emanuel Moshahary, BJP leader Deben Boro, ex-EM of BTC Bijitgwara Narzary, BJP leader Hemanta Kumar Rabha and other organisations have condemned the attack on the doctor couple and have demanded stringent punishment to the culprit.
