The Dibrugarh railway workshop becomes the first railway workshop in the Northeast to run completely on solar power.
A 1 megawatt(MW) solar power plant has been commissioned in the workshop which has made it completely independent of using any form of conventional energy for workshop operations.
The plant has 3000 solar panels successfully put up on the roof of the workshop without any additional space.
The workshop was set up at a cost of Rs 8 crore, will now save money for the 138- year -old Dibrugarh Railway Workshop. The total electricity saving on account of the solar plant has been Rs-2,70,000 per month informed chief public relations officer of North East Frontier Railway(NRF), PJ Sharma.
NFR has also installed 2.3 MW of solar energy across various railway stations, office buildings and even level crossing gates.
In 2017, a 700 kWp (kilowatts peak) solar plant was installed in Guwahati Railway Station with financial support from the Container Corporation of India (CONCOR).
