An idol of Goddess Durga in Assam’s Dhubri is bound to catch the attention of the viewers.

The idol installed in the pandal of ‘Reshmi Sangha Durga Puja Committee’ located at Panch More area will also set an example for eco-friendly idols for the future.

The idols of Goddess Durga and her four children (Ganesh, Lakshmi, Kartikeya and Saraswati) is to be made from the unused and waste electric wires, said its maker Sanjib Basak.

He is a government employee under Dhubri District Disaster Management Authority (DDMA).

Speaking about his ideas for the idol he said, “At a time when government and the concerned individuals are urging people to make the ensuing puja clean, green and environment friendly, but making eco-friendly idols out of waste products has not found any taker.”

While talking to Northeast Now, Basak about his inspirational ideas for the idol said, “The idea comes from the solid waste management at one hand while on the other hand the motto of ‘Clean Dhubri – Healthy Dhubri’ is behind this creativity.

It took him nearly two and half months to complete the idols while near and above 140 kilograms electrical wires of different colours has been used, he said.

Sanjib Basak who is a resident of Ward No 3 of Dhubri town have established his name among the known artistes of Dhubri town for finding innovative and eco-friendly ways to construct the idols of god and goddess since last couple of years.

Last year, he made the idol of goddess Durga with match sticks in which more than 1,75,000 match sticks were used.

“The idol is not just eco-friendly, but the expenditure is also minimal as well,” Basak added.

Reshmi Sangha Durga Puja Committee located at Panch More area of Dhubri town  is going to celebrate its 50 years this year.

Meanwhile, the district administration on Saturday during a meeting with different puja committees has also asked to opt for eco-friendly and plastic free celebration of the grand festival and issued dos and don’ts ahead of the Durga puja.
