Darrang district of Assam has been ranked as the best performing district across the north-eastern region.

Amitabh Kant was speaking at the three day Northeast –SDG (Sustainable Development Goals) Conclave 2020 at Guwahati starting from February 24.

A total 14 districts of north-eastern states have been included in the Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s aspirational district project.

These are Assam’s Dhubri, Goalpara, Barpeta, Daarang, Udalguri, Baksa and Hailakandi  while Namsai of Arunachal Pradesh, Chandel of Manipur, Ribhoi of Meghalya, Mamit of Mizoram, Kiphire of Nagaland, Dhalai of Tripura and West Sikkim district of Sikkim.

The rankings took into account incremental progress made by over 112 aspirational districts across six developmental areas in December 2019.

Health and nutrition, education, agriculture and water resources, financial inclusion, skill development and basic infrastructure were the development areas that were taken into consideration for the ranking.

Aspirational districts programme, launched in January 2018, aims to transform districts that have shown relatively lesser progress in key social areas and have emerged as pockets of under-development.

The ranking of aspirational districts is done every month.

Anata Lal Gyani, deputy commissioner of Dhubri said this has become possible only due to the tireless efforts of all banking officials and concerned departments.

Adding more, Gyani said, “We have recently launched a 15-day campaign in order to facilitate Kisan Credit Card (KCC) to all 1,52,000 farmers of the district and with different loans under PM-KISAN schemes.”

Nabin Kumar, lead bank manager of Dhubri district said the district has a total of 19 banks with 64 branches, 85 ATMs and over 300 Customer Service Points CSP’s.

“The district is also top amongst all the aspirational districts of the State, especially in regards to Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana (PMJDY),” Kumar added.
