The Dhemaji district unit of All Assam Students Union (AASU) has demanded the Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) authority to construct a swahid udyan (martyr’s park) at both ends of the Bogibeel Bridge.
The district unit of AASU led by Dipak Sharma and Kalyan Gogoi recently submitted a memorandum to Union Minister of Railways through the Deputy Commissioner detailing their four-point demand.
The Union has recalled that emergence of the Bogibeel Bridge over mighty Brhamaputra connecting Dhemaji and Dibrugarh districts is a fruit of Assam Accord, which was made between the AASU and Union Government at the end of six-year-long ‘Assam Movement’ for deportation of illegal immigrants from the land of Assam during eighty’s decade.
The union also demanded introduction of a new Rajdhani Express train linking Dibrugarh and New Delhi along Dhemaji-Lakhimpur route on daily basis.
It further demanded another ‘super-fast train’ from Dhemaji to Chennai to operate at least once a week, which it said will help the local people of the region in availing modern medical services there.
Another demand made by union in the memorandum was to upgrade Dhemaji and Silapathar rail stations to first class status with providing all modern facilities for the rail passengers.
The student’s union functionaries, who are happy over the scheduled inauguration of the much-hyped Bogibeel bridge on Tuesday, exuded their hope that the rail cum road bridge would boost link surface communication between north bank and south bank of Brahaputra in the eastern region of Assam and bordering Arunachal Pradesh thereby bring a new era of economic development to the region.
