North Lakhimpur: SP of Lakhimpur district in Assam Aparna Natarajan confirmed that the charred and headless body discovered in Dhakuakhana on June 2 has been positively identified as Jahangir Hussain, not Sunil Gogoi.

This identification was made possible through DNA analysis conducted by the DNA & Fingerprint Research Lab in Hyderabad, confirming a match between the remains and Jahirul Rahman, Jahangir Hussain’s brother.

This confirmation brings an end to over two weeks of speculation and complex developments in the Dhakuakhana murder case.

The body was initially believed to be that of Sunil Gogoi, a local BJP leader and Jal Jeevan Mission contractor, whose family had claimed it was him.

SP Natarajan also revealed that Sunil Gogoi had recently purchased an insurance policy worth Rs 41 lakhs, with his wife Pushpa Gogoi named as the nominee.

Consequently, a new case has been registered against Sunil Gogoi, his wife, and other accomplices for the murder of Jahangir Hussain.

The previously announced reward for information regarding the case remains in effect.

The gruesome discovery was made in a Som plantation in Sapotia-Chetiagaon, approximately two hundred meters from Sunil Gogoi’s residence.

This incident shocked the state and led Assam Police DGP GP Singh to personally visit the crime scene.

During the investigation led by the IG-CID, it was discovered that Jahangir Hussain, a mason employed by Sunil Gogoi, had been missing since May 31.

Further probe revealed a suspicious change in the phone numbers linked to Sunil Gogoi’s bank accounts in the days leading up to the murder.
