Guwahati: The Assam Congress on Thursday intensified its attack on the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) over the ongoing Special Revision (SR) of electoral rolls, alleging a โsystematic attemptโ to delete votersโ names through the e-KYC process.
Addressing a press conference at Ghoramara, Assam Mahila Congress president Mira Borthakur claimed that nearly 6,000 voters in the Dispur Assembly constituency were being targeted for deletion under the pretext of electronic Know Your Customer (e-KYC) verification.
โThe Election Commission and the BJP are trying to remove names in the name of e-KYC verification. In Dispur constituency, very tactically, around 6,000 peopleโs names are being targeted,โ Ms. Borthakur said.
She alleged that fair-price shop operators in areas such as Hatigaon, Ghoramara, Sijubari and Dakhingaon were being harassed and pressured to facilitate the process, even though they were not authorised to conduct e-KYC checks.
โFirst, names will be removed through e-KYC, and later the same names will be deleted from the voter list,โ she alleged.
Accusing the Election Commission of acting in tandem with the BJP, Ms. Borthakur said repeated complaints had failed to elicit any corrective action. โThe Election Commission is working like a BJP morcha. No matter how many complaints are submitted, they do not have the courage to act against them,โ she said.
Drawing parallels with Bihar, she claimed that a similar โvote theft modelโ was now being implemented in Assam. According to her, between 8,000 and 10,000 names were being deliberately deleted in constituencies where the BJP traditionally secured fewer votes.
โSo I ask the Election Commission โ will you work for the BJP, or will you work on behalf of the people of Assam?โ she said.
The allegation of โvote theftโ has emerged as a key Opposition plank ahead of the Assam Assembly elections. The Congress has been raising the issue since 2025, when Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi held press conferences alleging manipulation of electoral rolls in Karnataka and Bihar.
Concerns over the Special Revision exercise have also been flagged by other Opposition parties in Assam, including Raijor Dal and the All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF).
