Guwahati: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma faced backlash on X (formerly Twitter) on Friday after expressing doubts over a copy of the Indian Constitution held by Congress leader Rahul Gandhi in an image.
Sharing a collage on X (formerly Twitter) that included the front covers of the Indian Constitution, the Chinese Constitution, and Rahul Gandhi holding a book, Chief Minister Sarma suggested that the book Gandhi was holding might not be the Indian Constitution but rather the Chinese Constitution, based on its red cover. He called for verification.

“The original copy of the Constitution of India has a blue cover. The original Chinese constitution has a red cover. Does Rahul carry a Chinese Constitution? We will need to verify,” Sarma wrote on X, sharing the collage.
However, his post targeting Rahul Gandhi quickly drew sharp criticism.
Fact-checker Mohammed Zubair was quick to respond, pointing out that Union Home Minister Amit Shah had also been seen with a red-covered copy of the Indian Constitution, presented by EBC India, a legal information provider.
“Hello @himantabiswa, please ask your Home Minister @AmitShah to verify it. Even Amit Shah was presented with a copy of the Constitution of India (Coat Pocket edition) by team @ebcindia @scconline_“Zubair wrote on X, sharing images to support his claim.
Zubair also shared images showing Prime Minister Modi presenting a red-covered Constitution to former President Ram Nath Kovind.
“Hello @sumeetmalik462@ebcindia, Assam CM @himantabiswa wants to know if this is a Constitution copy of India or Constitution copy of China. Please clear his doubts. If possible gift him one,” he wrote.
Several users on X questioned CM Sarma’s understanding and knowledge of the Constitution.
