GUWAHATI: Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has sparked a major controversy with his recent remarks during a public speech.

Addressing a gathering, Sarma made highly ‘communal’ statements that have drawn sharp criticism from various quarters for their divisive nature.

In his speech, Sarma said, “Don’t tell Hindus to cool down. After so many years, Hindus are chanting ‘Jai Shri Ram’. So-called seculars stop us from saying Jai Shri Ram, can they stop Namaz? India is for Hindus! In an India-Pakistan match, those who applaud for Pakistan; we need to chant Jai Shri Ram against them.”

These statements have ignited a wave of backlash from political opponents, civil society groups, and social media users.

The opposition parties have condemned Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma’s remarks, accusing him of deliberately inciting communal tensions for political gain.

Many are calling for a more measured and inclusive approach from political leaders.
