Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma stated that there is an urgent need for legislation to protect the rights of tribal women in Jharkhand.

Speaking on the issue of marriages between individuals of different religions, he stressed on the importance of addressing the exploitation of tribal women in Jharkhand.

“When people of two different religions get married, it is done so under the special marriage act,” said Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma.

He said: “However, there is a concerning trend where individuals who migrate to India, already having a wife and family, lure and marry poor tribal girls of the state.”

The Assam chief minister also pointed out the vulnerabilities faced by tribal women and the need for specific legal measures to safeguard their rights.

CM Sarma called for the formulation of laws tailored to the unique socio-cultural context of Jharkhand, aimed at preventing the exploitation of tribal women.

“Keeping this subject in mind, we need to make laws specific to Jharkhand. We need to safeguard the rights of the women of Jharkhand,” the Assam CM asserted.
