The Asom Jatiyatabadi Yuba Parishad (AJYP) and 9 other organisations on Thursday staged a clamorous campaign against the construction work at Lower Subansiri Hydro Electrical Power project in North Lakhimpur.
Termed as ‘Rana Dhwani’ (war cry) against the LSHEP, a hydroelectric project of the NHPC Limited., the agitating group blew conch shells, bells and percussion instruments to declare a war against the project.
The agitational programme of the AJYP was joined by activists of nine other organizations demanding scrapping of the hydro-electric project for the safety and security of the downstream areas of the dam on river Subansiri in Assam.
Organized by the Lakhimpur district unit of the AJYCP, the protestors went for mass shaving of heads on Thursday in their protest site in front of the Hanuman Temple at Gariajan in North Lakhimpur.
Led by AJYP district unit president Lulu Baruah, the protesting organizations announced a series of agitation against the NHPC Limited commencing from November 30 to December 3.
Speaking before the media, prominent environment activist Keshav Krishna Chatradhar said, “The agitation that has been declared by the AYCP would soon take the form of a huge revolt if our demands are not met.”
The other participating organizations included AAMSU, MASS, AAGSU, AASCSU, HYCP and others.
