The Governor of Assam Professor Jagdish Mukhi – who is on a three-day visit to Dhubri and South Salmara Mankachar district (in Assam) – said on Wednesday that cattle smuggling is still “a matter of concern” for the Government notwithstanding the fact that cattle smuggling across the Indo-Bangladesh border has come down in the last couple of years.
The Governor said that due to “strategic deployment of forces, use of state-of-the-art gadgets and huge presence of the Border Security Force (BSF), cases of cattle smuggling across the Indo-Bangladesh border had come down”.

However, Mukhi said that he was not satisfied with the work of the Customs Department when it came to the whole procedure of seizing cattles. “I will take up the issue with the concerned authorities to ensure that the seizure procedure is made totally transparent.” Mukhi further remarked, “Very soon, I will visit the entire stretch of the Indo-Bangladesh border to find out the exact points through which this whole business of cattle smuggling is going on merrily.”
He also visited the Dhubri Civil Hospital and the municipal areas and expressed his satisfaction over the cleanliness drive taken up by the district administration. While interacting with media persons late on Wednesday evening at the Dhubri Circuit House, the Governor said that he has directed the district administration to install a permanent waste disposal unit in Dhubri town and hoped that within the next two or three months, the said disposal unit to be installed at an expense of Rs 18 crore, will “get rolling”.
Mukhi will visit South Salmara Mankachar district on Thursday while on Friday he will visit Madhupur Satra at Cooch Behar in West Bengal. Earlier, Mukhi met the BSF officials apart from the officials of the district administration in Dhubri and municipal councillors of 16 wards of the town.
