All India Congress Committee (AICC) general secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra on Sunday made a frontal attack on Prime Minister Narendra Modi, stating that his speeches in Assam were not befitting of a man in his position.

Addressing a massive rally at the Court Field in Jorhat, Priyanka said that based on the tweet of a 22-year-old girl the PM had expressed concern about Congress conspiring to finish off the tea industry.

Priyanka was campaigning on behalf of Congress candidate from Jorhat constituency, Rana Goswami.

Modi in an election rally at Chabua on Saturday had referred to this tweet.

“Instead of talking about the issues facing this state and BJP’s’ agenda, he concentrated on a tweet of a 22-year-old girl, making this the basis of conspiracy theory against the tea industry by the Congress. Does this befit the office of a Prime Minister?” Priyanka said.

“The PM is showing so much concern about the tea industry. Has he ever visited a tea garden and seen how hard the women there work?” she further questioned.

Modi did not show any concern when Assam gets flooded every year, she claimed.

Priyanka said that the Congress would give Assam a chief minister who belonged to the state.

“The BJP has two chief ministers, one here and the other controlled by Delhi. One does not know in which direction the two engines will move, ” she said with a laugh.

Priyanka’s speech centred around the twin planks of preserving the culture, language and identity of the people of Assam in a better way and the ruling BJP governments selling off of Assam’s assets to a few “industrialist friends. ”

Ticking off all the promises — CAA would not be implemented, Rs 350 wages to tea workers, preserving jaati, maati, bheti, employment of 5 lakh per year, — that the BJP had promised prior to the 2016 Assembly election,  Priyanka said that all were lies.

“Threat looms large on the people who will lose their identity once CAA is implemented,” she said.

“BJP is bent on selling off properties belonging to the people like the Lokopriya Gopinath Bordoloi airport and land of farmers in Nagaon to their industrialist friends,” she added.

Priyanka went out of her way to woo women by saying that they are the main source of protecting the culture and traditions in the society.
