Guwahati: A 20-year-old woman, identified as Janaki Thapa, was found hanging from the ceiling fan of a hotel room in Assamโs Tinsukia town on Thursday.
Police confirmed the recovery of the body and said a detailed investigation is underway to determine the exact circumstances of the death.
According to police, the incident came to light after hotel staff failed to receive any response from the room despite repeated knocks.
A male guest booked the room earlier in the day, raising questions about the sequence of events that led to the tragic discovery.
Tinsukia Police Station Officer-in-Charge Purunjay Bora confirmed the development, saying police sent the body for post-mortem examination following legal procedures.
โThe inquest has been conducted in the presence of a magistrate, and a panchnama (memorandum of proceedings) has been prepared. The post-mortem report will be crucial, and we are examining all possible angles,โ Bora told Northeast Now, adding that no conclusion would be drawn until forensic and circumstantial evidence are fully analysed.
The hotel owner, speaking to the media, provided details about the booking and discovery of the body.
โA male guest had booked the room for Rs 800 for one day. Later, when our staff went to check the water tap and received no response from inside, we became suspicious and immediately informed the police,โ the owner said.
Police sources said they are verifying the identity of the male who booked the room and examining CCTV footage from the hotel to trace movements before and after the incident.
They are also recording statements from hotel staff and relevant witnesses.
The deceased, Janaki Thapa, was a resident of Purana Mahang, Man Paneng village in the neighbouring Namsai district of Arunachal Pradesh.
She was the daughter of Dil Bahadur Thapa, police confirmed. Police have informed her family and will take further action after they arrive.
Officials have not ruled out any possibility, including suicide or foul play, at this stage.
The case has drawn attention to womenโs safety, hotel surveillance, and accountability, with officials calling for a thorough and transparent investigation.
