The activists of the Jorhat district units of AASU and AJYCP along with members and supporters of 30 allied organisations staged a demonstration at Jorhat in protest against the CAA.

The protest was held in front of the Jorhat deputy commissioner’s office.

The protesters shouted slogans against central and state leaders of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), including Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Assam chief minister Sarbananda Sonowal and finance minister Himanta Biswa Sarma.

They also shouted slogans against Assam agriculture minister and Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) president Atul Bora, water resources minister Kesav Mahanta.

Representatives of different ethnic tribes, lawyers, artistes, cultural activists, businessmen and people from other professions also participated in the protest programme.

AASU organising secretary Jul Khound, Jorhat unit AASU general secretary and president Jitu Neog and Surjya Bhuyan respectively, CAA Birodhi Mancha president Niranjan Mahanta, Jorhat district unit president and general secretary Pranabjyoti Saikia and Debojit Hazarika respectively were among those who joined the demonstration.

In Assam, the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) is perceived as a threat to the identity of the people here as it proposes to give citizenship to Hindus, Sikhs, Christians, Parsis who have faced religious persecution in Bangladesh, Pakistan, and Afghanistan.

Assam, already swamped by a huge Bangladeshi illegal migrant population including Hindu Bangladeshis is apprehensive that if granted citizenship the influx would increase resulting in the Assamese becoming a minority in their own land.
