The police on Sunday arrested five persons in connection with the death of two minor girls at Abhiyakuthi village in Kokrajhar district.

Rubita Rabha and Somaina Rabha were found hanging from a tree under mysterious circumstances at Abhiyakuthi on the evening of June 11.

According to police, the bodies of the two girls were found hanging from the branch of a tree in a nearby forest area about a kilometer away from their house.

Kokrajhar superintendent of police Prateek Thube said five prime suspects were arrested and their interrogation is on.

The accused were identified as Hanif Ali, Jahanur Islam, Sankardev Barman, Mohammad Atab Ali and Muzammel Seikh, all in the age-group of 20 to 27 years.

He said the police are looking at all possibilities behind the death of the two girls.

The autopsy report is expected to arrive in a day or two.

Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma also visited Abhiyakuthi on Sunday to meet the family members of the victims.

The chief minister said that prima facie evidence suggests that the girls were either murdered or were forced to commit suicide under duress.

He said the government has not taken the death of the two innocent girls lightly and asked the Bodoland Territorial Region IGP and SP Kokrajhar to ascertain if it is a murder or a suicide and find the reason behind it.
