Amid nationwide lockdown in view of COVID19  pandemic, three youths have been arrested by Sonitpur Police on charges of attacking police patrolling team.

Sensation has prevailed in Tezpur-Kundurabari area under Bebejia police outpost since Sunday night after some youths of the area attacked a police patrolling team in the area.

Police sources said, “A police team, led by officer-in-charge of Bebejia police outpost, Sarat Das, while patrolling in Kundurabari area, noticed a group of 10 youths sitting together near a shop.”

“The police team questioned the youths why they had come out at night violating lockdown norms,” sources said.

“But the youths, who were in inebriated conditions, attacked the police patrolling party in which officer-in-charge Sarat Das sustained serious injury,” said the sources.

The vehicle used by the patrolling party was also damaged in the attack.

On receiving the information, additional police personnel from the district headquarters rushed to the spot to rescue the patrolling party from the attackers.

The police later carried out a search operation in the area and arrested three youths involved in the incident.

The arrested youths have been identified as Madhurjya Koch, Kunal Bikash Baruah and Nihal Bikash Baruah.

Additional SP (HQ) of Sonitpur district, Numal Mahatta, said, “A case, No .721/2020, has been registered at Tezpur police station under sections 260, 294, 429, 353, 394, 307, 325, 143 of the IPC and R/W 51(A) (B), Disaster Management Act.”

Mahatta also said, “Five persons were involved in the incident. While three have been arrested two others are absconding till now. Further investigation is going on.”
