Firebrand RTI activist and Krishak Mukti Sangram Samiti (KMSS) supremo Akhil Gogoi was whisked away by a huge contingent of security forces from the Srimanta Shankardev Kalakshetra moments before the the arrival of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) national president Amit Shah for the NEDA conclave on Sunday.

The third political conclave of the North East Democratic Alliance (NEDA), a platform of BJP and its nine regional alliance parties of the North East, is being held in Guwahati on Sunday.

Akhil Gogoi was arrested along with hundreds of KMSS activists who had gathered in front of the Kalakshetra, the venue of the NEDA conclave.

Notably, the KMSS has decided to greet Amit Shah with black flags on Sunday protesting against government’s move to push Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2016.

The KMSS is also observing ‘black day’ on Sunday.

Akhil Gogoi, while being taken away said that though they had planned to stage a protest demonstration in a democratic way, the administration had acted in a barbaric way which is demeaning to democracy.

Akhil had earlier called upon the Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) to boycott the NEDA conclave and exhibit their protest against the citizenship bill.

It is learnt that Amit Shah is in Guwahati to draw up strategies for the ensuing Lok Sabha elections slated for next year.

The BJP national president is also expected to hold parleys with Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal, NEDA convenor Himanta Biswa Sarma and State BJP president Ranjit Das.

Sources also revealed that the recent developments over the controversial citizenship bill in Assam are likely to figure during the meetings.
