AASU members burnt the effigy of Assam chief minister Sarbananda Sonowal in front of the Jorhat DC’s office on Monday in protest against cancellation of the written test for sub-inspectors in Assam Police.

The written test for the recruitment of sub-inspectors (UB) in Assam Police, scheduled to be held on from 12 pm on September 20, was cancelled due to leakage of the question paper.

The students under the banner of All Assam Students Union (AASU) shouted slogans against the Assam chief minister, who is also in charge of the home portfolio.

A member of the students’ union said the chief minister was responsible for the leakage of the question paper on social media just prior to the holding of the written test as he was in charge of the home department.

The protesting AASU member further said the Assam government should stop playing with the lives of unemployed youths of Assam.

The first advertisement for the recruitment of sub-inspectors against 597 vacant posts was published on November 4, 2018.

On November 6, 2019, another notice/corrigendum was issued by the State Level Police Recruitment Board.

The Assam Police have started an investigation into the incident of question paper leakage, sources said.
