Sensations grips Digboi after a self-proclaimed Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) worker of Ward No 3 under Digboi Town Committee (DTC) area in Tinsukia district allegedly served a death threat through SMS to Bhaskar Jiban Baruah, former DTC chairman, on Monday afternoon.

Baruah, who is also an active Congress leader and social worker of Digboi, received the death threat from the mobile telephone number 8876035799.

The aggrieved Congress workers along with Baruah lodged a police complaint here on Monday evening against the self-proclaimed BJP worker, Kabul Chowdhury of Ward No 3, who did not cite any reason in the SMS for threatening the former DTC chairman.

However, the supporters of Baruah suspected that the act must have been a design by saffron workers to mentally harass the Congress leader-cum-ward commissioner of ward No 3 who along with four others had moved
the ‘no confidence’ motion against present BJP chairman Shipra Mallick recently creating trouble in the BJP-ruled  DTC.

The Congress supporters said, “Telephonic intimidation to an active Congress leader like Bhaskar Jiban Baruah bears a clear testimony to the fact that the saffron party has much to worry with the move of the Congress
and the way it is heading towards the next Lok Sabha election in 2019.”

Registering a case, the police have started investigation into the
allegation.

No arrest has been made in this regard till filing of this report.
