Acting on a tip-off, a police team led by Officer-in-Charge of Khetri Police Station PK Nath in cooperation with Noonmati Police on Sunday arrested a woman cop from Shantinagar in Guwahati’s Narengi area on charges of being involved in a land fraud case.

The 49-year-old woman, a Police Sub-Inspector, who has been identified as Premalata Saikia, was arrested from her residence at around 1 pm.

As per information, Saikia took around Rs 8 lakh from one Hemalata Bhati of Six Mile in Guwahati to sell a land owned by Bhati, which is located at Khetri.

Officer-in-Charge Nath said, “She had been absconding after taking a huge amount of money to sell a 3.5 katha land at Khetri.”

Nath also informed that the accused, who earlier worked at Dispur Police Station, was transferred to Nalbari District Executive Force (DEF), six months back from Guwahati. “But she did not join there,” Nath said.

Talking to Northeast Now, Commissioner of Police, Guwahati, Hiren Chandra Nath informed that the arrested police officer had been involved in a number of cheating cases.

A case (No 27/16) was registered at Khetri Police Station under section 420 (Cheating and dishonestly inducing delivery of property), 406 (Punishment for criminal breach of trust) and 506 (Punishment for criminal intimidation) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).

The accused would be produced before the court of the District and Sessions Judge Court, Kamrup (Metro) on July 16, 2018.
