The data boot camp northeast for editors and reporters in Guwahati is underway at the Assam Don Bosco University.

This first-of-its-kind data journalism initiative in the Northeast region aims to strengthen/promote data-driven reporting, data mining, visualization and build collaboration between journalists, doctors, data researchers, policy makers among others in Northeast region.

DataLEADS in collaboration with Google News Initiative and Global investigative Journalism Network, USA is hosting the boot camp.

The two-day event will have speakers like co-founder of Bohniman System Abhijit Bhuyan, director general Assam Police Kuladhar Saikia, editor of North East Live Wasbir Hussain and senior journalist and author Paranjoy Guha Thakurta. Google News Lab Lead (APAC) Irene Jay Liu, professor at Columbia Journalism School Raju Narisetti, director of Global Investigative Journalism Network (USA) David Kaplan and CEO of Global Editors Network (France) Bertrand Pecquerie will join via video link.

The boot camp will have sessions on how to use data for storytelling, how to visualize data for newspapers, how to do internet research to combat fake news and how to generate story ideas for stories.

An additional session on job opportunities in global journalism and a special session on Google tools for journalists will also be hosted at the camp.

Similar boot camps have been hosted all over Asia including Malaysia, Sri Lanka, Thailand, Maldives, Bangladesh and Hong Kong.
