Bhubaneswar Kalita is the Congress candidate for the Mangaldai Lok Sabha seat, which went to parliamentary polls in the second phase on Thursday.

But despite being a candidate for the Lok Sabha seat, Kalita, who is currently a Rajya Sabha MP and a former president of the Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC), did not cast his vote on Thursday.

Kalita, the Congress candidate contesting the ongoing Lok Sabha polls from the Mangaldai parliamentary constituency, has his name in the electoral roll of Pub Sitara in Rangiya under Kamrup (Rural) district.

But although he was present at Rangiya, which falls under the Mangaldai Lok Sabha constituency, refrained from casting his vote.

According to information, Kalita will cast his vote in the third phase of the ongoing parliamentary elections on April 23 when the Guwahati Lok Sabha constituency will go to polls.

Apart from Pub Sitara in Rangiya, Kalita, who is a former Rangiya MLA, also has his name enrolled in the voters’ list at Christan Basti in Guwahati.

At Christian Basti, his name has been included at No 614 in No 225 electoral roll.

A senior supporter of Kalita informed Northeast Now that he had to prepare nomination papers for this year’s Lok sabha elections. Therefore, in his nomination papers, Kalita filed the documents having details of his Guwahati residence.

According to the documents he had submitted during his nomination, he should cast his vote in Guwahati. So, he skipped voting in Rangiya to avoid trouble by casting his vote in a different place.

However, on April 23, Kalita will cast his vote in favour of a Congress candidate in Guwahati Lok Sabha constituency.

It may be mentioned that Badruddin Ajmal, the All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) candidate for the Dhubri Lok Sabha seat, which will go to polls on April 23, cast his vote at Hojai on Thursday.
