Guwahati: Assam‘s famed GI-tagged Tezpur litchi has taken a significant step towards international recognition with its first export consignments reaching overseas markets, drawing praise from Union Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal.
Highlighting the achievement, Goyal said the export initiative marks a new chapter for farmers in Assam and the wider Northeast, enabling them to access global markets and secure improved returns for their produce. He noted that the maiden consignment of Tezpur litchi was dispatched to Dubai with support from the Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (APEDA).
The development coincides with the centenary celebration of litchi cultivation in Tezpur. To commemorate the milestone, the Sonitpur district administration recently organised the two-day Tezpur Litchi Festival 2026 at the District Library premises, showcasing the region’s rich horticultural legacy.
During the festival, approximately one tonne of litchis from different varieties was exported to Dubai, while another 600 kilograms was sent to Singapore. The consignments were ceremonially flagged off by officials, including Anand Kumar Das and Prithviraj Rabha.
Officials described the exports as a landmark achievement for the region’s fruit growers. Tezpur litchi, renowned for its vibrant colour, juicy pulp and unique taste, has steadily gained demand beyond domestic markets, paving the way for greater international outreach.
The growing popularity of the fruit was also reflected in this season’s market prices. The premium Bombay variety reportedly commanded between Rs 40 and Rs 50 per fruit, while sales at the festival crossed Rs 4 lakh in a single day.
Tezpur’s association with litchi cultivation dates back more than a century. In 1923, eminent Assamese litterateur Padmanath Gohain Baruah introduced litchi orchards in the town, laying the foundation for what has become one of the region’s most celebrated horticultural products.
At present, over 150 farmers are engaged in litchi cultivation across more than 400 bighas of land in and around Tezpur. The region produces several popular varieties, including Bombaiya, Chahi, Bilati, Piyaji, Chinese, Rongiya, Kath Bombaiya and Elaichi litchis, each known for its distinct characteristics.
With exports now reaching international destinations, stakeholders believe Tezpur litchi is poised to strengthen its position in global fruit markets while boosting income opportunities for local growers.
