North Lakhimpur: The Association of Indian Universities (AIU) has accepted in principle a proposal submitted by North Lakhimpur University (NLU) Vice Chancellor Mukul Chandra Bora for the inclusion of Environmental Humanities in higher education curricula across the country.

The decision was communicated through a letter issued by AIU Secretary General Pankaj Mittal on June 5 following deliberations at the 100th Annual General Body Meeting of the AIU held at D. Y. Patil Vidyapeeth in Pune on April 30.

As part of the decision, the AIU will circulate the proposal among its member universities to seek feedback, suggestions and recommendations before considering a broader policy framework.

The General Body also requested Bora to prepare a comprehensive concept note on the theme, “Inclusion of Environmental Humanities in Higher Education Curriculum,” which will be shared with universities nationwide for consultation.

The proposed framework seeks to integrate environmental concerns with disciplines such as humanities, social sciences, culture, ethics and Indian Knowledge Systems through a multidisciplinary approach.

The initiative is aimed at strengthening environmental awareness in higher education while encouraging a broader understanding of sustainability-related issues among students.

The proposal is also aligns with the objectives of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, which advocates multidisciplinary learning, sustainability and the incorporation of Indian Knowledge Systems into academic programmes.

The AIU’s decision marks a significant academic development for North Lakhimpur University and places the institution at the centre of a national discussion on incorporating environmental perspectives into higher education curricula.
