Guwahati: In a historic milestone for both Assam and the country, Rupamoni Gorh from Lakhimpur has become the first woman from Assam to scale Mount Everest, the worldโ€™s tallest mountain.

She accomplished the feat as a member of the Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) All-Women Everest Expedition 2026, a special mission aimed at showcasing womenโ€™s growing presence and excellence in mountaineering and extreme adventure sports.

The expedition team reached the 8,848-metre summit on May 21 through the South Col route from the Nepal side. The group included 11 women climbers along with three technical support personnel, with the first successful summit recorded at 6:52 AM despite difficult weather and high-altitude conditions.

Rupamoniโ€™s achievement has been widely celebrated across Assam, particularly in her home district of Lakhimpur, as she became the first Assamese woman to conquer Everest and represent the state on one of the toughest terrains in the world.
