Guwahati: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Friday described the reappearance of the Dhole in the Kaziranga National Parkโ€“Karbi Anglong landscape as a significant achievement for wildlife conservation in the state.

In a post shared on X, the Chief Minister said the Dhole, known for being a stealthy and efficient wild predator was once commonly found in the forests of the region before gradually vanishing over the years.

Sarma attributed the speciesโ€™ return to sustained conservation measures undertaken by the government, including expansion of forest cover, restoration of wildlife corridors and eviction of encroached forest areas, which together helped improve habitat conditions for various species.

He further stated that evidence of the Dholeโ€™s comeback has emerged gradually through wildlife monitoring efforts. The first indication came in 2022 when a lone animal was captured in a camera trap image. This was later followed by direct sightings, and conservation teams have now confirmed the presence of an entire pack in 2026.

According to the Chief Minister, the return of a top predator like the Dhole reflects a healthier and more balanced ecosystem, besides indicating improved habitat connectivity and successful biodiversity conservation initiatives.

Wildlife experts and conservationists are viewing the development as a positive sign of ecological restoration in the Kaziranga-Karbi Anglong landscape, which remains one of Assamโ€™s most important wildlife corridors.
