Assam Director General of Police Kuladhar Saikia on Friday informed that Assam Police has been communicating with their Uttar Pradesh counterparts to bring Hizbul Muzahideen operative Qamar-uz-Zaman under their custody.
Zaman was arrested by Anti-Terrorist Squad (ATS) at Kanpur in Uttar Pradesh on September 13 last.
While addressing the media here on Friday, DGP Saikia also informed that the police have been interrogating the eight arrested suspected jihadis.
“We are communicating with the Uttar Pradesh Police to bring Qamar-uz-Zaman, who hails from Jamunamukh in Hojai, under Assam Police’s custody for interrogation,” said DGP Saikia.
Meanwhile, talking about the security management during the forthcoming Durga Puja festival keeping in view the recent attempts to expand jihadi activities in the State, the DGP said, “Assam Police is ready to handle any kind of situation.”
Saikia also said, “There would be no compromise with the security. Security would be definitely beefed up across the State especially in some suspected jihadi-prone areas in the State.”
According to information, Zaman, who allegedly planned to expand the network of Hizbul Mujaheedin in Assam, stayed in one Riyazuddin Bhuyan’s house at Bandura Aanti in Kasua when he visited the State last month.
Bhuyan was arrested from Kasua while two others – Jainal Ahmed and Baharul Islam – have been arrested from Jamunamukh in Hojai on September 17.
The other associates of Zaman who have also been arrested by police are Shahnewas Alom, Omar Farooq, Saidul Alom and Saiful Islam.
