An accused in the Morikolong robbery case was killed during an alleged gunfight with police in Assamโ€™s Nagaon district late Monday night.

Guwahati: A man accused in the Morikolong robbery case was killed during an alleged exchange of fire between police and suspected criminals at Borkandoli in Rangalu under Assamโ€™s Nagaon district late on May 25.

The deceased, identified as Khairul Ali alias Moni from Thana Road in North Lakhimpur town, was reportedly among the main accused in the robbery case and had been evading arrest since the incident.

According to police, Khairul had allegedly returned to Nagaon on Monday night with plans to carry out another robbery. Acting on intelligence inputs about the gangโ€™s movement, a police team launched an operation in the Borkandoli area.

Police claimed that the suspects opened fire after encountering the security team, prompting retaliatory action from the personnel. During the exchange, Khairul Ali suffered bullet injuries.

He was rushed to Nagaon Medical College and Hospital but was declared dead on the way, officials said.

Security personnel also recovered a 7.65 mm pistol along with two empty cartridges from the spot.

An investigation into the incident and the robbery case is currently in progress.
