Guwahati: Following the arrest of one of its senior office-bearers in Tinsukia in connection with alleged fund transfers linked to ULFA-I, the All Assam Students’ Union (AASU) on Monday clarified that the organization has no association with violence or the ideology of any militant outfit.

AASU president Utpal Sharma and general secretary Samiran Phukan stated that the student body has never endorsed the ideology or activities of ULFA or any other militant group. Reaffirming the organization’s commitment to democratic principles, the leaders said AASU has consistently relied on peaceful means in its movements and will continue to uphold the same path in the future. They also asserted that the union neither supports nor promotes violence or any anti-democratic actions.

The organization further asserted that it has never backed, and will never endorse, any act deemed harmful to the nation’s interests. AASU said the issue is being viewed with seriousness and that an internal assessment will be carried out before any further organizational decision is made.

Meanwhile, the student body’s chief adviser, Samujjal Bhattacharya, reiterated that violence has no role within AASU and emphasized that its members remain committed to peaceful and democratic practices.
