The Darrang District unit of the All Assam Senior Citizens’ Forum and Mangaldai Senior Citizens’ Association in collaboration with the Darrang district administration and the District Social Welfare Department observed International Day for Senior Citizens at Mangaldai on Monday.
A public meeting was held on the occasion in the Darrang District Sahitya Sabha auditorium where two members of the Senior Citizens’ Forum – Matidev Shastri, a Government literary pensioner and Nilakanta Saharia, a Government recognised veteran artiste was felicitated.
The meeting was presided over by the president of the District Senior Citizens’ body Phulendra Nath Saharia. Several prominent speakers including the president of Darrang Sahitya Sabha, Dr Ramchandra Deka, Additional Deputy Commissioner (ADC) Kalpana Deka and Hareswar Sarma, Secretary, Mangaldai Senior Citizens’ Association, spoke on the occasion.
The objective behind holding the meeting was explained by Atul Chandra Barua. Earlier, the meeting was inaugurated by the Deputy Commissioner of Darrang Ashok Kumar Barman. In his speech, Barman stated that the elderly group of people played a pivotal role in the society.
