The Assam government has written to the authorities seeking details of around 380,000 individuals, who were left out of final National Register of Citizens (NRC) draft but have not filed claims forms for their inclusion in the roster.

Out of 40, 07,707 individuals, who were excluded from the final draft, published in July 30, 2018, 36.2 lakhs have filed claims for inclusion of their names in the final list, Hindustan Times reported.

Ashutosh Agnihotri, commissioner and secretary, home and political department, said  the government needs information of those who still haven’t filed claims so that they could prepare for filing references to the Foreigners’ Tribunals.

Agnihotri mentioned that a letter has been sent to the office of the state coordinator of the NRC, Prateek Hajela seeking details of those 3,80,000 individuals.

He further stated that when the final draft of NRC will published in July 31 this year (as per the deadline set by the Supreme Court), the individuals whose names get dropped off the list will get a chance to file complaint against their exclusion to the Foreigners’ Tribunals (FTs).

“If there are still individuals who do not approach the FTs on their own, the state will do so on their behalf,” said Agnihotri.

The state government has also stated that the details of the 3,80,000 individuals may help them keep an eye on where these individuals and prevent them being anonymous.

“It will most likely help… otherwise like so many other declared foreigners they may also disappear,” he pointed out.
