Assam Governor Prof Jagdish Mukhi on Friday said that we need to take responsibility for making our society more embracive, inclusive and sensible where women get fair share in the socio, economic, political and cultural development narratives of the State.

The Governor said this at the International Women’s Day celebration at Gauhati University on Friday, organized by the Department of Women Studies, Gauhati University.

Governor Prof Mukhi underscored the need of making International Women’s Day more than a celebration and transform it into an agenda setting occasion for empowerment of women.

Governor Prof Mukhi said, “Women folk constitute a substantial chunk of our entire human resources and without the empowerment of women our society cannot progress.”

He, however, stated that empowerment in the right sense of the term means providing adequate opportunities to every woman folk to help them achieve their aspirations. He also said that an empowered India should provide opportunities to every woman to achieve her potential through education, health care, nutrition and employment.

He also stated that the fact that the country’s position is not that encouraging in human development index, women empowerment becomes a paramount importance.

Assam Governor also said that women have demonstrated their leadership in governance, diplomacy, social norm, politics and gender equality and therefore, a society cannot have the leverage of putting them away from the agenda of priorities.

The Governor also conferred awards to women achievers of Gauhati University. The achievers are the girl toppers from the different faculties of the university in the academic year 2016-18 as well as the toppers of the Inter University Youth festivals in the field of culture and sports.

Vice chancellor of Gauhati University Dr Mridul Hazarika, head of the Department of Women Studies, Gauhati University Dr Alpana Borgohain also spoke on the occasion.
