After keeping herself away from the Congress party, which she had quit two-and-half-years back, for being sidelined in the last Assam Assembly elections, Congress’ former Duliajan MLA Amiya Gogoi returned to the party on Monday.
Amiya Gogoi, who represented Duliajan Assembly constituency from 2011 to 2016 and also became the chairman of Assam gas Company, failed to get party ticket in the 2016 State Assembly polls.
A humiliated Gogoi left the Congress before the Assembly polls, expressing her unhappiness at not being given party ticket and contested the Assembly polls 2016 as an Independent candidate from Duliajan Constituency. However, she was defeated in the polls.
She rejoined the party during a programme held at Rajiv Bhavan here, the headquarters of the Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) in presence of the former Chattisgarh Chief Minister and general secretary of the All India Congress Committee (AICC) in charge of Assam, Harish Rawat and APCC president Ripun Bora.
During the joining ceremony, both Rawat and Bora welcomed the former Congress MLA to the party with gamosas.
However, Amiya Gogoi while speaking on the occasion reminded Assam Congress president Ripun Bora to be careful in selection of candidates during the elections.
She said: “I am still a ‘Congressi’. I have not left the Congress ideology. Now, I have come back again to my own home.”
Expressing that she left the party after being denied party ticket in the last Assembly polls, Gogoi said: “It is painful if one does not get party ticket working hard before the election.”
On the occasion, Assamese actor Nayan Nirban Baruah also joined the Congress.
Nayan Nirban baruah, who hails from Batadraba, the constituency, which has now been represented by MLA and popular Assamese actor Angoorlata Deka, expressed his willingness to work for the people being in the political field.
