Former three-time Assam chief minister Tarun Gogoi has set the ball rolling for the municipal elections.
Flanked by and former Jorhat MLA and AICC member Rana Goswami, Gogoi on Monday addressed Congress party workers and members of sister organizations in Jorhat.
The municipal polls are likely to be held next year in the State.
The poll will be seen as semi-final to the State Assembly elections in 2021.
A membership drive would also be started this month across the State.
Gogoi in his address said that the workers have to work very hard to counter the false campaign being carried out by the BJP at national and at the state level.
The meeting was organized by the Jorhat district unit of the Congress.
Gogoi said that the workers have to go door-to-door and meet people at the grassroots to expose the lies and misinformation campaign of BJP-led governments at the Centre and in Assam.
The former chief minister appealed to the party rank and file to start from grassroots in exposing the ‘failures and misdeeds’ of the BJP.
Criticizing the Narendra Modi-led Government, he said that the economy of the country was in a shambles due to the ‘wrong policies’ of the Centre.
He urged party workers to take it to the people that BJP was excessively pro-rich and was least concerned about poor downtrodden and weaker sections of the society unlike Congress.
Speaking at the meeting, AICC secretary and former Jorhat MLA Rana Goswami too, took BJP to task for deceiving the people by creating hype and hoopla.
He alleged that a syndicate was controlling trade in Jorhat by having full support of several local BJP leaders leading to rise in prices of commodities.
Goswami further stated that the businesses community was living under constant fear due to the ‘syndicate raj’ with police administration turning a blind eye to it.
The former MLA said that from September 12 onwards the party will start a membership drive across Assam to expand and strengthen the party.
