Assam CM Sarbananda Sonowal laid the foundation stone of Tingkhong Polytechnic Institute to be setup at No 1 Betoni Village under Tingkhong LAC in Dibrugarh district on Sunday.

The institute will be constructed with financial outlay of Rs. 50 crore under SOPD Scheme by the Directorate of Technical Education in an area of 35 bigha land.

In the same programme, Assam Chief Minister Sonowal also laid foundation stone of construction of Multi Purpose Market at Rajgarh in Tingkhong under Signature Project with an expenditure of Rs. 10 crore and strengthening of Rajgarh Community Health Centre with an expenditure of Rs. 1.91 crore under National Health Mission.

Speaking on the occasion, Chief Minister Sonowal underlined the importance of education in building robust personality and edifice of a strong and vibrant nation.

He said that the state government accords utmost importance to strengthen academic infrastructure to develop ideal environment for students in the state.

The state government has also made adequate allocation of fund in the state budget keeping this in mind, he said.

Stating that the world today is ruled by science and technology, the Assam CM stressed on the importance of technical education saying that the state government has taken up several steps to expand its ambit.

Moreover, emphasising the need to improve skill and ability of the students to develop them as smart student, the Chief Minister urged the parents and teachers to play a more proactive role in this regard.

Further saying that the state government is working with the vision to ensure education for students of all sections of the society irrespective of their economic condition, the Chief Minister said that steps like distribution of free text books, uniform, waiver of admission and examination fees have been taken up so that students of poor families could also avail the benefit of education.

The Assam Chief Minister, moreover, said that in a bid to provide adequate academic opportunities for students of the state, the government of Assam has already taken steps for setting up 6 medical colleges, 9 engineering colleges, 30 polytechnic institutes and 240 Skilled Development Centres in each block of the state.

He also said that one Cultural University at Majuli, Sports University at Chabua in Dibrugarh district apart from setting up a Skill Development University in collaboration with Singapore have been taken up.

The Chief Minister also highlighted the anti corruption measures being carried out by the state government to rid the administrative system from this social menace so that the youth of the state could get employment on the basis of merit only.

Assam Education Minister Siddhartha Bhattacharjya while delivering speech on the occasion spoke about various steps being taken by the state government in the education sector.

He also announced that the education department would introduce science stream in Tingkhong College from next academic session.

Dibrugarh MP Rameswar Teli and Tingkhong MLA Bimal Bora also delivered speech on the occasion. Lahowal MLA Rituparna Baruah, Vice Chairman of Assam Gas Company Ltd. Indra Gogoi, Principal Secretary of Education Department Maninder Singh, Dibrugarh Deputy Commissioner Pallab Gopal Jha and host of other dignitaries were present on the occasion.
