Guwahati: The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Wednesday (August 28) said it has filed a charge sheet against the then Assistant Commissioner of Central Goods and Services Tax (CGST), GST Commissionerate Guwahati, in a bribery case.
The Central investigating agency in a press statement said it had registered a case on June 29, 2024 against the accused, M Srinivasa Rao, on the basis of a complaint lodged by a businessman.

The complainant alleged he was served demand and show-cause notices, and was called to the CGST office by Rao a number of times. The complainant also alleged he had carried out civil works against which he paid all the due taxes, it said.

The complainant further alleged when he visited the CGST office to enquire about the matter, Rao demanded a sum of Rs two lakh from him as “undue advantage” for passing favourable orders. However, after negotiations, Rao allegedly agreed to accept Rs 50,000 as bribe, it added.

The premier investigating agency then laid a trap and caught Rao red-handed while demanding and accepting “undue advantage” of Rs 50,000 from the complainant, it said.
Subsequently, Rao was arrested by the CBI. Searches were conducted at the office and residential premises of Rao at Guwahati and Hyderabad, the statement further said.
