Major Ponung Doming created history by becoming the first woman Army officer to be elevated to the rank of Lieutenant Colonel in the Indian Army from Arunachal Pradesh.

Informing this, national security advisor Ajit Doval on his Twitter handle said on Monday, “Now this is a real empowered and daring woman!

“Major #Ponung Doming creates history. She is first woman Army officer from #Arunachal to be elevated to the rank of Lieutenant Colonel in the #IndianArmy,” he added.


Arunachal Pradesh chief minister Pema Khandu while congratulating Doming on his Twitter handle said, “Hearty congratulations and best wishes!”

“A proud moment for all of us…,” he said.

According to information, Ponung Doming is the eldest daughter among four siblings of Olom Doming and Jimmi Dai Doming from GTC, Pasighat under East Siang district.

Ponung Doming also made the Arunachal Pradesh proud becoming the first Army Major from the state.

Ponung Doming, who did her schooling from the Govt. Daying Ering Higher Secondary School, cleared Class XII from IGJ Govt. Higher Secondary School at Pasighat.

She has also experience of being a part in the UN peace keeping mission at Democratic Republic of Congo representing India.

After clearing the entrance examination, Ponung Doming did her civil engineering from Walchand College of Engineering in Maharashtra in 2005.

As her first engagement after engineering, she joined L & T Company, Kolkata where she worked for around two years. In the meantime she continued her preparation for the Service Selection Board, Allahabad.

In 2008 she was able to make entry in the Indian Army and joined the Officers Training Academy, Chennai.

Ponung Doming, after her joining in September 2008 as Lieutenant, rose to the position of Major within four-and-half years.

She joined the United National Peace Keeping Mission in April 2014 at Democratic Republic of Congo.
