Arunachal Pradesh’s Tawang MLA Tsering Tashi on Wednesday declared open the 6th edition of Late Dorjee Khandu Memorial District-level Badminton Tournament at the Jang Sports Club in Tawang.
Besides Rinchin Drema, the widow of former chief minister late Dorjee Khandu and other family members, the inaugural session was also attended by the 38th Bn SSB Commandant Rajesh Thakur as the guest of honor.

Speaking on the occasion, MLA Tashi said the tournament is very close to his family.
He recalled that late Khandu was very fond of sports, particularly badminton and used to encourage everyone to play it.
“So, as a tribute to him, we have started this tournament,” Tashi said.

Lauding the organizers, he further conveyed his best wishes to all the participating teams and players.
Taking opportunity, Tashi also said he has high expectations from Kiren Rijiju, the union minister of sports and youth affairs.
He hoped union minister Rijiju would initiate many new projects in Arunachal Pradesh, especially Tawang for the overall development of games and sports.
Earlier, while welcoming all the dignitaries here at Jang Sports Club, Jang ADC and also the chairman of Jang Sports Club, Lobsang Wangchu Bapu, conveyed his gratitude for giving JSC, the opportunity to organize the tournament.
He also lauded MLA Tashi and the family members of late Khandu for their constant support in making events success in Jang in particular and Tawang in general.
JSC secretary Dr Rinchin Neema presented a brief history of the tournament since its inspection in 2012.
Dr Neema also said two new categories – ‘women’s veteran’ and ‘Under-19’ – have been included in the tournament so as to encourage the working women to come forward and show their talent and at the same time provide a platform to the young players for increasing their performance.
