The Miao branch of the Arunachal Pradesh State Cooperative Apex Bank in Changlang district has landed in troubled waters after rumours of it going bankrupt spread like wildfire.
A number of its clients rushed in to the branch on Monday to withdraw their deposited money and in the process, the lockdown protocols, especially social distancing, went for a toss.
Most of these clients went with the MGNREGA job cards and old-age pension papers.
Not a single customer was willing to listen to the bank officials and bank manager DN Thakur’s repeated assurances about the news being a rumour fell into the deaf ears.
“There was no way out and we had to release the money,” the officials informed.
Bank officials further informed that several accounts would be closed as most of them left no balance in their account.
“Moreover, they will also be not getting the interests,” the officials added.
